Will Dubin Mixed Doubles Tournament

The 10th Annual Will Dubin Mixed Doubles Tournament, hosted by the Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association, was recently held at The Cynwyd Club. Tournament Director Molly Pierce reported that many new teams competed in all draws, including strong showing in the Open by Cornell alums and brother/sister Kellen and Tripper Heckscher, Sue Greene and local Pro Brian Callahan who stepped in for the injured Chris Wright, and the unseeded semi-finalists Maryann Crowe and Andy Snyder.  Will Dubin's wife, Louisa Dubin, also competed and served as the tournament's official photographer.

In the "C" draw, The Cynwyd Club's Ty Meredith and Pam Rende cruised to victory without dropping a game winning in the finals over Germantown Cricket players Whitney Thain and Harry Erney. In the "B" draw, Merion Cricket's Hilary Armstrong teamed with national champ John Frazier who also played flawlessly and went undefeated winning in the finals over The Cynwyd Club's Sharon Heuisler and Wolfgang Jaeger.

In the Open Draw, Canadian National doubles champ Alan Grant teamed with former Trinity standout Kat VanBlarcom in taking the title over SquashSmart's Trevor McGuinness and Berwyn Pro Amy Milanek. Van Blarcom/Grant took the first game in a see-saw battle that featured crushing cross court drives by Grant and McGuinness who each sought to push the other back so his partner could take advantage of the opening. The pace in the second game remained fast with Milanek/McGuinness taking an early and commanding lead shooting crisp reverses that were all out of their opponent's reach.

VanBlarcom/Grant responded with a series of nicks and tight drops allowing them to pull ahead and squeak out the win. The pace in the third game changed with high cross court lobs exchanged between Milanek and VanBlarcom, with the former holding steady and keeping the lead through the entire game. However, the pace picked up again in the fourth as VanBlarcom/Grant pulled ahead early and did not look back as they captured the win. Tourney Referee Demer Holleran, founder of the new Fairmount Athletic Club located outside of Philadelphia that will be hosting the US Nationals is March, applauded the high level of competition and remarked that this event is the precursor for the National Mixed scheduled to play in NYC in the spring.
